Micro 4 Thirds Sensor

The single most important factor. Both new cameras (X5 and X5R) come with a huge boost in quality as a result of the new micro four thirds sensor. The difference this makes on the final product is huge (to me anyway). Check out these images below showing the comparison. Most of the points below relate to this increased sensor size and is by far the biggest selling point for me and many other photographers/cinematographers out there.

Higher Bitrate and RAW 4K

Whilst all three versions of the Inspire record 4K video, the upgrade to the X5 brings with it the ability to capture 16 megapixel photos in Adobe DNG RAW (vs 12.4 megapixels on the X3) and in the in the case of the X5R you’ll be recording lossless RAW 4K with a bitrate of 1.6Gbps. This is HUGE. The Zenmuse X5 and X5R are among the smallest Micro 4/3 cameras ever made and the only Micro 4/3 cameras designed specifically for aerial imaging. The Zenmuse X5R is also the first camera of this type able to shoot 4K RAW video, making it perfect for professional filmmaking. As M4/3 cameras, you have a choice of lenses and also full wireless control over focus, aperture and more.

IN THE ABOVE VIDEO: IF YOU’RE NEW TO CINEMATOGRAPHY THE NOTICE WILL SEEM VERY SMALL. TO MY EYES HOWEVER THE DYNAMIC RANGE AND OVERALL INCREASE IN CINEMATIC FEEL IS CONSIDERABLE ENOUGH TO CONSIDER THE UPGRADE.

Remote Focus Ability
Screen Shot 2016-01-16 at 12.45.08 pmThe X3 camera has infinity focus and therefore the user has no control of over this. The new camera’s have much more creative control with this added ability to focus pull from the air – just awesome.

The App and User Experience

DJI has really out done themselves by creating high quality drones that are simple and fun to operate. The DJI GO app is intuitive, easy to grasp and comes with heaps of amazing features such as waypoints, point of interest and other intelligent flight modes. The ability to control camera settings on the app is huge. Back in the day  you would attach a go-pro to a drone and then couldn’t change till you’ve landed. With the Inspire 1 and its subsequent versions you have complete control over ISO, shutter speed, and now focus – all through your phone connected via USB to the RC remote. Talk about convenient.

Dynamic Range & ISO

The new camera’s offer a massive increase in quality as a result of the new sensor. ISO ranges from 100-25600 which is a a considerable increase from the X3’s 100-3200 ISO range. This allows for much higher quality photo’s and video in low lighting. On top of this, the boost in dynamic range will result in more of a cinematic feel in the footage with a huge 12.8 stops of dynamic range. This helps in all situations and reduces one of the biggest problems of the original Inspire – overblown images/videos in either the foreground or background depending on what you’re exposing for in the shot. For the first time we are seeing commercial quality footage on smaller sized drones. Previously you would have needed something like an S1000 with a Sony A7S/GH4 to get this sort of image. Now for almost have the price you can get the same result.
